Second Arc ー Chapter 7 (Part 1): To Cheng

It was 3 am to 5 am, when officials waited for the morning court assembly in the cold.

Jiang Chenyu did not sleep for the whole night and waited in Yao Guang Palace.

Meanwhile, at the court assembly, the civil and military officials all had solemn expressions as they whispered among themselves. The air was pervaded with a restless atmosphere.

Zhao Yin was leaning against his dragon chair. When he saw the situation, he smiled. “My dear subjects, have you thought of a candidate to head for Nation Cheng to congratulate them for the birthday celebration?”

The officials glanced at each other a few times. Finally, all of them looked at Ji Ying helplessly. Unfortunately, Ji Ying just had to be looking downwards humbly with a peaceful countenance and did not say a word. He appeared to be not interested at all. If Marquis Qi Ao doesn’t go, who can they send?

Zhao Yin swept his eyes across them and looked at Jiang Zhong, “Does Right Prime Minister have a good recommendation?”

Jiang Zhong stepped forward hesitatingly. “Replying to Your Majesty, based on this old subject’s opinion, we need to contemplate cautiously on who to choose as the candidate we dispatch to Nation Cheng…” Zhao Yin merely needed to hear his opening sentence to guess that this old fox was about to beat about the bush again. As expected, Jiang Zhong continued, “I heard that although Nation Cheng’s Princess Yi Shu is both talented and good-looking, she lacks in conduct and has a irascible personality. She even orders her three elder brothers around with no respect at all. Such a rouge horse* can’t be managed by an ordinary person. Hence, we definitely have to be extremely prudent when selecting the candidate setting out on this journey. Not being able to marry the princess successfully is a small matter. Instead, bringing disgrace to Nation Bi is the more serious matter. Your Majesty is wise. I am sure Your Majesty long has a candidate in your heart…”

There is a rouge horse decoration too. Here is a picture:

Before he finished speaking, Zhao Yin already waved his hand impatiently. “Alright, that’s enough. Qi Ao, you say.”

When the officials saw that Marquis Qi Ao was targeted, all of them pricked their ears to listen attentively.

Ji Ying stepped forward but stood in the middle of the main hall silently for a long time. At last, he spoke, “This humble subject recommends a person ー Divine Physician, Jiang Wanyi.”

This answer was clearly beyond everyone’s expectations. After the surprise, they whispered to one another coninuously. What kind of person is this Jiang Wanyi? He is merely the son of the Chief of the Imperial Physician Institute who was of a Fifth Rank. He had no official rank or achievements from the imperial examinations. Although his reputation greatly surged due to Consort Xihe’s case of poisoning, he was after all a common poor scholar. How can he represent Nation Bi to contend for the position of the Prince Consort?

Zhao Yin seemed to rather enjoy it after he finished hearing. He nodded and smiled. “Marquis Qi Ao’s personal recommendation will definitely have qualities that surpass others.”

“This subject recommended this person for three reasons. Firstly, King Cheng has been indisposed in bed for a long time. As the daughter, Yi Shu must be extremely worried inside her heart. If Wanyi can cure King Cheng’s illness, even if he can’t be conferred as the Prince Consort, there would also be other favors.”

When the officials heard until this point, they could not help but find it wonderful. ー That’s right! As long as he cures the old man, do they still have to be afraid that the daughter is unwilling to marry? This is much more convenient, faster and brilliant than wracking their brains to contest with the candidates from the two other nations in literary talents and martial arts. As expected of Marquis Qi Ao. The candidate he thought of certainly stands out from the masses.

“Secondly, although Wanyi has no official rank or achievements in the imperial examinations, he is Consort Xihe’s elder cousin brother, an imperial relative. His identity is respectable enough to match the princess.”

As soon as he uttered this out, the officials were stupefied.
Please support the translator by reading at Michilun Translations. It is free to do so.
What? Jiang Wanyi is Consort Xihe’s elder cousin brother? What’s going on? When did the two of them climb up to become an imperial relative?

On the other hand, the few ministers who had caught wind of the rumors and already knew about this matter had complicated expressions. Thwart him. But it’s the intention of the Son of Heaven. Who would have the gall to mess with the emperor? Don’t thwart. But that bewitching imperial consort has climbed up and gained a supporter and she would definitely be even more favored in the future. At that time, it would even more difficult to eradicate her…

When they looked at His Majesty again, they saw that his eyebrows were slightly arched and he laughed in a clear voice. “So it turns out that Qi Ao is already aware of this matter. That’s right, this emperor is preparing to pick a good date to let the Ye Family and Jiang Family acknowledge each other as relatives. In this way, it’s good too. It’s just right to confer a noble rank to Wanyi and let him go to Nation Cheng in a grand manner.”

When the officials heard what His Majesty said, they hastily swallowed back the words at the side of their mouths. They were extremely clear about it in their hearts. What’s with asking for Marquis Qi Ao to recommend a candidate. It’s obvious that the ruler and the subject had discussed beforehand and echoing one another. They really know how to put on an act.

Ji Ying continued, “Thirdly, not only is Wanyi proficient in medical skills, his literary talents are also outstanding. On top of that his looks stand out and he is modest, elegant and courteous. He doesn’t lose to any descendants of aristocrats and is precisely a superior candidate for the Prince Consort.”

Zhao Yin clapped and laughed heartily. “Good, very good, extremely good!” When he was done, he even turned his head to ask, “What do my dear subjects think?”

How would the officials have anything to say now? They hastily bent their heads and followed.

Meanwhile, a little eunuch dashed into Yao Guang Palace. Jiang Chenyu had already been waiting for a long time. He described the situation in the court assembly. Lastly, he said, “Replying to Your Highness, after the ministers discussed for a while, all of them agreed to dispatch Jiang Wanyi.”

Wo Yu panicked. “Your Highness, what should we do? His Majesty chose Jiang Wanyi.”

Jiang Chenyu bit the bottom of her lips. In the end, she only said two words, “Inquire again.”

At the court assembly, the envoy candidate was finalized in the harmonious voices of the officials. Zhao Yin suddenly said, “That’s right, where’s General Pan?”

Luo Heng answered at one side, “Left General went to Ping Qiu to collect his father’s bones and build a grave for him. Calculating the number of days he had gone, he should be back soon.”

Zhao Yin nodded. “Subject Pan’s filial piety touches even the heavens.” He paused for a moment. “This trip to Nation Cheng would be a long journey. Wanyi doesn’t know martial arts. On top of that, unforeseen circumstances may happen any time. I’m afraid that he may face danger when sailing on the boat in the seas. Why don’t we dispatch Subject Pan to go along with him so that they also help to look out for one another. Issue this emperor’s imperial decree, command him to wait in Yuan Zhou. After Subject Jiang arrives, they will board the boat together. Just treat it as going to Nation Cheng to relieve their worries.”

Hence, another item was added to the imperial decree. The officials simultaneously praised the emperor as wise. As Zhao Yin listened to their compliments and looked at their obsequious behavior, he felt greatly pleased in his heart. When he thought about the Xue Clan wielding power back then and how he had never been this well-regarded. When he says one, how would the officials dare to say two? The feeling of holding actual power in one’s hand is indeed very good. Very very good…

Luo Heng presented the imperial decree he had drafted out for His Majesty to look over. When Zhao Yin saw the jet black names ‘Jiang Wanyi’ and ‘Pan Fang’ on the yellow satin, he suddenly recalled that letter card Jiang Chenyu sent several hours ago and could not help but laugh again.

Refreshing! Refreshing! Ever since he has proclaimed himself as emperor for four years, he only felt the most refreshing today!

He stood up, turned around and flung his sleeves as he left. Luo Heng hastily shouted, “Court assembly is dismissedー”

In Yao Guang Palace, as Jiang Chenyu listened to the little eunuch who came another time to supplement what he had said, her heart that was suspended mid-air finally felt relieved. But at the same time, she also felt a deep uneasiness.
Please support the translator by reading at Michilun Translations. It is free to do so.
After all, she had still underestimated the emperor.
Please support the translator by reading at Michilun Translations. It is free to do so.
She had been wholeheartedly thinking of winning by a surprise move. Hence, although she was fully aware Jiang Wanyi was the best candidate based on her feelings and the circumstances, she still took an alternative approach by choosing Pan Fang out of the court officials.
Please support the translator by reading at Michilun Translations. It is free to do so.
She also had three reasons for choosing Pan Fang:
Please support the translator by reading at Michilun Translations. It is free to do so.
Firstly, Pan Fang was the current Left General. His identity and power were no longer the same as back then. Moreover, His Majesty had the intention of pulling him to his heart. When giving him an incomparably revered honor, he also gave him a marriage. This was what was known as gilding the lily and favoring him again and again.

Secondly, although Yi Shu had very high standards, viewing the men in the world as nothing and disdained ordinary scholars, she worshipped heroes the most. Pan Fang was an impressive resolute and valiant men who had been in the battleground for a long time. Furthermore, he was deeply devoted to Young Lady Qin so he must be unwilling to marry the princess. When the other envoys scramble madly for Yi Shu continuously, Pan Fang would be the only one who treats her indifferently. When one contrast these two, it went without saying as to who the proud princess would develop a greater interest in.

Thirdly, as everyone was aware, Nation Cheng was fond of martial arts. They had rather reputable accomplishments especially in the aspect of smelting metal and weapons. But they valued what belongs to them. How would they reveal such secrets to the neighboring nations? Hence, they could be marrying the princess in name but there were many things they could do in the dark. Although Jiang Wanyi was good in everything, the fact that he only did not know martial arts was quite fatal. If it was Pan Fang, it would be different. Although he was a martial artist, he was perceptive, steady and experienced. Otherwise, it would not have been possible for him to direct the three armies. No matter from which perspective she looked from, he was the most appropriate candidate.

Regarding this third point, Huai Jin objected. “If he is really an intelligent person, why would he go look for the Xue Family. Not only did he regain justice for Young Lady Qin, but he was also beaten until he was half dead instead.”

Jiang Chenyu had replied her like this back then, “This is what they call losing forbearance when one is concerned. Young Lady Qin was Pan Fang’s only kryptonite. Once the matter is related to Young Lady Qin, Pan Fang would have no wisdom to speak of. However, he doesn’t even have this only weakness now. What else is there in the world that can move him again?”

However, these three reasons were actually only on the surface. There were only two real reasons:
Please support the translator by reading at Michilun Translations. It is free to do so.
First, she was not willing to let Xihe become dominant. Hence, she could not let Jiang Wanyi become Nation Cheng’s Prince Consort.

Second, compared to conferring an empress in the imperial harem, His Majesty currently attached more importance to the court and popular sentiments while Pan Fang was the first person he wanted to take in as his subordinate.

With these two reasons, she could disregard the best candidate in Zhao Yin’s heart and propose the name she wanted to mention.

It was just that she did not expect that in the end, she still…lost by a little.
Please support the translator by reading at Michilun Translations. It is free to do so.

Really wise…

Zhao Yin was much more intelligent than she had thought. That was because she did not choose one between these two people but simply push the both of them out. This way, Jiang Wanyi could treat King Cheng while Pan Fang could also seize the opportunity to steal Nation Cheng’s military intelligence. Between the two of them, no matter who could receive Yi Shu’s favor, it was all considered a victory for the emperor. Even if they do not become Nation Cheng’s Prince Consort, as long as they settle those two matters properly, the aim of this trip would have already been achieved.

As expected, she is still a little too inexperienced. Jiang Chenyu gazed at the first rays of the morning sun outside the window. She was a little discouraged but pulled herself together quickly. No matter what, this beginning was still considered not bad. The road ahead was still very long. She did not fight this battle that remarkably this time but she could make it more brilliant the next time. What she lacked was not wisdom but experience. Just like how it was impossible for a boy who still has tufts of hair drooping down to grow into an adult overnight.

Hence, it’s alright.
Please support the translator by reading at Michilun Translations. It is free to do so.
She closed her eyes and repeated it to herself. It’s alright, she still has a next chance. The next time, she will definitely improve further.

Jiang Chenyu inhaled a deep breath, then opened her eyes. The red clouds in the morning sky were extremely magnificent. They reflected on her face that had no makeup, making her eyes resplendent like the first morning stars that fell into earth.

At this moment, Luo Heng appeared at the entrance of the palace hall and smilingly bowed. “His Majesty requests to see Pure Consortー”

The second chance has come so fast.
