Chapter 4 (Part 1): Conflict

It was a death-like silence under the roof. Only the very slight rustling sound of snow falling could be heard.

The servant girls and old female servants standing at the side were all holding their breath and did not dare to emit any sound. It was just that their gaze while cautiously looking at Ren Yaoqi and Ren Yaohua all carried a little nervousness.

A burst of warm air suddenly rushed into my chest, causing me to vomit and cough out a mouthful of water.

I heard a resonant sound. “It’s alright already! Won’t die!”

My thoracic cavity felt painful. I repeatedly coughed quite a few times and choked out the water in my windpipe. My head was still very dizzy and the echo of the gong sounded nonstop in my brain. My clothes were naturally drenched. As soon as the wind blew, I repeatedly sneezed quite a few times.
A large hand gently patted my back. Heat was transmitted from his hand, making my chest feel very warm. I inhaled big mouthfuls of air, then opened my eyes.

After a series of rustling movements, the two servant girls, Qing Mei and Xue Li lifted the curtains and came in.

“Miss, what instructions do you have?” Qing Mei said eagerly in a fawning manner and moved closer.

Ren Yaoqi said, “Come over to serve me to wear my clothes and get out of bed.”

Qing Mei smiled obsequiously, “Miss, you can just instruct this servant to do whatever you want to. It’s better if you don’t get out of bed?” But she cast a sidelong glance at Ren Yaoqi’s wrist.

Old Fellow Qing was more than sixty years old. He was both dark-skinned and thin with his back crooked. He was silently smoking tobacco. When he saw that we had come down, he raised his eyes to take a look with no expression.

I saw that he was skinny until he was almost a handful of bones which could simply be ignited with by striking a matchstick. This kind of old person could still paddle the boat forward? It’s not that I was suspecting his abilities but rather because I felt that this was practically torturing an old person.

It was as sudden as a lightning bolt out of a clear sky!

All the Jiang members who were kneeling in the main hall were completely shocked by this imperial decree that unexpectedly arrived all of a sudden. Jiang Zhong who was at the lead, raised his head and gazed at Luo Heng who had come to announce the decree as he said, “Eunuch Luo, this is…”

I asked, “What situation?”

Although I couldn’t see, I could also imagine the expression of Great Immortal when grabbing his head and scratching his head. “I can’t say it clearly in words. It’s better to bring you to take a look. Don’t worry, it’s not any big issue either…”

I was dragged along by the force as I traversed the clouds and mist. Soon, I flew until the city I originally dwelled in. Seeing the skyscrapers and large buildings once again, the word excited was no longer sufficient to express my mood. My eyes became wet immediately.

“Consort, it’s raining and we didn’t bring an umbrella. Should we return to the carriage?”

“That’s right, Consort. It isn’t early anymore and we have come out for very long so we should also be returning to the palace. Besides, these apricot flowers haven’t even bloomed yet. Why don’t we wait until they have opened before we come to see again…”

The earnest voices that were advising her fell on deaf ears. The person who was advised withdrew her gaze from the two people in the pavilion. Then, she slowly turned around.

She still remembered that when her Mother and Third Elder Sister came back in her previous lifetime, she could not go pay her respects to her Mother in time because her illness had worsened but a few days later when her Father returned to the residence, she wore the clothes and ornaments Father brought for her from the capital and went out to meet the guests.

Due to that, her Third Elder Sister, Ren Yaohua, found her even more unpleasant to the eye.

North of the capital, there was a San Chuan County. The county had an inn called Long Men* and the inn had a proprietress called…No no, not Jin Xiangyu* but called Xu Fengxian(Xú FèngXiān).

*T/n: ‘Long Men’ means Dragon Gate. There is a movie called ‘New Dragon Gate Inn’ and there’s a character called ‘Gam Seung Yuk’, also known as ‘Jin Xiangyu’, who is the proprietress of the Dragon Gate Inn.

Ren Yaoqi nodded and said to the woman in front of her, “When did Concubine come?”

Although there she had her back to the light, she still saw the woman beside her clearly. She was wearing a light purple fox fur coat embroidered with satin orchid and a white pleated skirt. Her jet black hair was raised in a ‘falling off the horse bun’* and had only a pair of golden hairpins of a unique style.

*T/n: Here is one example:

“How much does this stalk of apricot flowers* cost?”

*T/n: It is referring to the ‘armenian plum’. I’ll be using ‘apricot flower’ for simplicity’s sake and partly also because the literal translation means that.

In the boundless place of darkness, light and radiance burst forth due to this one sentence. That light was first a glimmering spot. Afterwards, it leapt up to form a blaze and unfolded a halo of light which gradually diffused outwards.

“Ten coins.” Vaguely, there was a clear and young female voice which replied. As if it was a repertoire from a Chinese opera performance which had already been written hundreds and thousands of years ago, it went on according to that routine she was familiar yet unfamiliar with.

Xiao Xuan chuckled. “Yixin? She’s the daughter of Tai Zhou’s Senior Provincial Zheng. His Majesty appointed this marriage to me as what he fancied was that Tai Zhou is at the south of Xi Yao. In the future……if there are any movements in the court, Tai Zhou can be a buffer for me for a while.”

I was curious. “How is she like?”

“There were altogether 107 people who escorted me to the fief. They were all imperial palace experts* personally selected by His Majesty. In addition, there were also Yu Zhengxun and Xie Zhaoying who took the initiative and insisted on sending me out of the frontier. We travelled towards the north the whole journey. By the time we reached the Ding mountain pass, there were only seventeen people remaining. Zhengxun was heavily injured and was forced to stay behind within the frontier to recuperate. But the actual danger was outside the frontier. The Zhao faction’s assassination troops were secretly lying in ambush at the side of the road and waiting to put me to death. If I die within the frontier, they wouldn’t be able to get away from being involved. If I die outside the frontier, they could simply incriminate Nation Liao’s people falsely and wouldn’t be related to  it.”

“Elder Sister, what’s exactly the matter?” Jiang Chenyu had always thought that regarding conducting oneself, Elder Sister was much more slick and seasoned than her. No matter how deeply sorrowed she felt in her heart, her countenance would still remain calm and collected. They grew up together since young but when had she ever seen her forget herself so much? She did not know how terrible a matter had occurred to actually let this elder sister of hers who was always brimming with confidence cry like a child. She only became like this after the Jiang father and son left. Could it be……
